Leaving A Green Legacy

No one really likes to talk about death, especially their own, but it is inevitable!  Due to the high cost of a traditional burial many people are choosing cremation as a way of disposing of their earthly remains.  But did you know that, even in death, you can have a positive impact on the environment?

A Living Reef Memorial (or reef ball burial) is a green alternative, for those who choose cremation.  In a nutshell, this is how it works: The cremains of an individual are mixed with a compound of natural and organic materials such as shells and other marine friendly matter.  This mixture is then put into a mold to cure.  Once it has cured, the reef memorial is then ready to be taken out to sea.

These living reefs create new marine habitats for fish and other forms of sea life that are critical to the environment.  By establishing new reefs we are helping to take the pressure off the natural reef systems and help repair the damage that has been done by mankind.

In addition to providing for the environment, living reefs are considerably less expensive than traditional burials with some starting as low as $800.00.   Generally included in the price of a reef ball burial is a memorial plaque (that is attached to the reef ball) and a ceremony at sea.  Families also receive a certificate with coordinates of the burial site.  There are several companies that do these reefs so do some research and find the one right for you and your family.
